My intention this weekend was to purchase a Panasonic 42″ Plasma TV, but after a great amount of searching and reviewing LCD and Plasma TVs I finally settled on the Philips 42PFL7432D 42″ LCD TV as Best Buy had this TV on sale over the weekend for $1,499.99.

Being the father of 4 kids who can not turn off the lights let alone the TV when they are finished watching, the thought of purchasing a Plasma TV bothered me as I was concerned about the “burning” of images if the picture remains static for too long. I also did not want a DLP or LcoS rear projection TV as we were looking for something to mount on the wall. This TV met all of my criteria, LCD and 1080p, perfect!

I’ve had HDTV in my home off and on since 2000. In 2002, I got a 27-inch LCD flatscreen TV that I used with a set-top tuner to receive off-the-air HDTV broadcasts. It worked pretty well and I still use this setup in my bedroom. However, a 27-inch TV is a little small for viewing HD broadcasts and I also wanted to take advantage of improvements in receiver technology.

I therefore replaced my old HD setup with the Vizio Gallevia GV47L 47-inch LCD TV. I bought it at Costco with a great coupon for $1,650, which is far less than any other 1080P set that I researched. The GV47L is now selling for $1,699 at Costco, without a coupon. This is a great price for a 1080P HDTV.
