Research:

I must say I went back and forth about whether to buy a TV at all or if I should be looking at LCOS, DLP or LCD instead. Well after much research (I originally had my heart set on a KF50WE610 50″ projection TV) it seemed like they were having too much trouble with bulbs going prematurely on DLP and LCOS projection sets and at $200-300 each, I was not willing to risk this extra cost. The LCD sets looked promising but the largest I could get in the price range I was going to spend was 32″ (an I was not going to spend $2-3K for a 32″ 16:9 …..actually smaller than a 32″ tube TV which I was replacing), this is likely the way TVs will go in the future when production costs come down far enough. So I was left with and the potential burn-in problems (they do also consume more current than most TVs, but mine only consumes 2-3 amps @120V max so that is not much of a worry for me). Well it seems as though they have done quite a bit of work on burn-in and the newer sets have anti-burn technology which minimizes this effect. I have tested it several times on my LG and I have had zero problems with that (I can pause a DVD for an hour and come back to play it with no ghosting).

TV Features:

The TV has alot of features, but most of those you can look up in the “view details” section so I won’t go into that specifiacally too much, but I will comment on certain things. First, it goes without saying that you should get an additional home theater system because the TV’s speakers (at only 10W) are woefully underpowered. Also be sure to use the component video to hook it up because it makes a huge difference in the video clarity as well as audio quality. I do wish the set had more digital inputs and outputs to give you more connecting options, but you can’t have it all for this price. This set is also an EDTV which I also researched quite extensively and to be honest, I could barely tell the difference in the showroom (between HDTV at 720p and EDTV at 480p) and I certainly couldn’t tell sitting on my sofa 14ft away. It falls into the nice to have category but again, EDTV was fine for my purposes at this point in time. It will do 480P which is as good as DVDs get at this time. I will say that you do notice when shows are shot in poor quality because you notice alot more detail even with EDTV than with a regular tube. I do love finally having the 16:9 aspect ratio and the LG has a setting called “horizon” which does a great job of adapting standard 4:3 programming to fit the wider format in an almost unoticable way. The set does also have PIP, but I don’t make use of that option much at all since I have TIVO.

One last gripe I have is that they forgot a section in the manual for how to program the remote. I finally found the missing section by downloading the manual for the RU-42PX11 set (the remote is the same on both). I was also a bit disappointed the remote won’t control all the menu features on the digital cable box so I mainly use the cable remote now and just taught it the major TV functions.

I couldn’t be happier with this LG, but I do recommend getting an extended warranty because there are very few repairable parts on these so when they need fixing it is usually VERY expensive.
