This was my second digital/HDTV. I have a large rear-projection one in the living room. I am using this one for bedroom or kitchen duty (kitchen at the moment).

I have to say this right away: If you need a small HDTV set for over-the-air reception… the VX20L is the one to get!!!! The tuner in this thing is incredible! I live close to Baltimore. From here, you can normally pick up some of the stronger DC stations. But this picks up even the weakest DC stations! Even the analog tuner is great. Weak analog channels come in clearer than ANY TV I have ever used! I really wish other manufacturers paid attention to their tuners!

Of course, if you get your signal with cable or satellite, the sensitivity is not a concern. In that case, the thing that stands out most about the VX20L is its horrible sound from the built-in speaker. Prior to buying, I had read other complaints about the sound. They are dead on. The sound is tinny and weak. Listening for a long period is fatiguing. Luckily, there is a headphone jack on the side and I believe computer speakers plugged in there will fix the sound situation.

I would rate the picture as average. Good enough for kitchen or bedroom viewing. The refresh rate is good so that there is not much blurring with fast motion. Color temp is adjustable with a setting for the proper 6500K (see the manual). In that setting, the color is a bit on the red side. Sometimes, bright areas of the screen get washed out.

The VX20L has an HDMI input and can be used as a computer monitor, as well. I found the manual very well written. The TV has a clean look. The on screen display is excellent. The remote control looks very utilitarian (i.e. ugly), but is very intuitive and easy to use. (I have stuff with beautiful remotes that are just a nightmare to use.) The remote has no backlighting, which might be a problem in the bedroom. I imagine you could get a universal remote to take care of that problem.

You have to be careful with the low-priced digital TVs being sold today. Some of the dirt- models don’t have full 16:9 ratio screens. In the 20-ish inch category, I don’t think there are any other real 16:9 sets cheaper than the VX20L.

Apparently only sells through a few retailers that allow to keep their markup down. I know of Sears, Circuit City, Sam’s Club, and Costco. With Sam’s, they currently don’t display the VX20L in the store. You have to special order it online for shipment to your home. By the time you do that, it is cheaper to go to Circuit City. (Which is where I bought mine… and caused me a big hassle because CC turned out to be out of stock after they sold it to me…the whole thing at CC was a comedy of errors. I don’t normally shop at CC and that experience confirms why. But I digress.) Sears had a much higher price when I checked. Normally, I prefer to buy electronics over the internet, but it wasn’t an option with this due to the company’s limited distribution.

I also looked at the Samsung LNT1943/1954 19-inch TV. It seems to cost about the same as the , but has gotten poor comments in other reviews on this site and others. The LG 20LS7D looked like it had a better picture than the , but it cost significantly more; plus, other comments made me slightly uneasy about its ergonomics and its sound quality. When in doubt, I go with the cheaper model and I’m glad I did. (The tuner! the tuner! So great!)

All in all, I am so pleased with this TV, for the excellent tuner and good price, that any other minor problems (like the sound) are insignificant. I am so happy to see a TV manufacturer actually put a good tuner in a TV! A news report I heard recently said that around 30% of households don’t use cable or satellite. I feel that I don’t get enough value out of cable to justify the 50 bucks a month, so I am one of them. I think made a smart move with their great tuner for a 20-inch sized TV because even households with cable or satellite might not have a hookup in the kitchen or bedroom. I certainly hope that puts the same great tuner in their larger sets. I will definitely lean toward when I replace my big TV next time if I find out the tuner is as good as this one.
