I bought this TV back in June, so I’ve had some good experience with it. Overall, I’m very happy with it.

I almost bought the prior model version - the 5060/5061 (depending on whether you bought it from Best Buy or anywhere else), but held off until the newer models were released, and what do you know - the price actually dropped! I don’t know how Pioneer did it, but kudos to you! I compared this set extensively to the Panasonic’s in the store and believed that these two units were the best among the plasma tv’s I could see. The Panasonic was actually lower in price, but what swayed me to the Pioneer was that it was a nice-looking black shiny bezel, whereas the Panasonic had a cheap looking silver bezel. Seems like a small feature, but it makes all the difference mounted on the wall.

I was also deciding between the 50″ and the 60″ since my couch sits about 16′ from the TV and the guys over at AVSforums.com seemed to think the 60″ would definitely be warranted. While I initially thought so, the 50″ is a good size. The wall that the TV is on could handle the 60″ and it might even fill it out a little better, but I don’t struggle to see anything on the 50″ and the Hi-def isn’t lost on the 50″ either - something I was concerned with.

So, I followed Pioneer’s recommendations, and set the TV to decreased contrast and brightness for the first 200 hours. Even at that level, the picture quality was amazing. I couldn’t wait to increase the settings back to the eye-popping levels I saw in the store, but by the time that my break-in period was over, I didn’t even need to. The picture on this TV is absolutely great. I tried connecting both DVI, HDMI, and component cables, and found little difference, so I just use the component since it allows me to connect everything through my receiver. I only use this one set of inputs, but this TV has so many options for inputs, I can’t imagine needing anything that it doesn’t have.

Since I bought it and installed it, this TV has had absolutely no problems (knocking on wood as I write this). I’ve been nothing but happy with my purchase. The prices have actually come down a bit since I bought it, so of course I wish I could get some of that back, but then again, I’ve been enjoying my TV for 8 months already so I can’t complain.

One thing I can’t comment on is the sound. I have a pair of Martin Logan speakers hooked up flanking the TV on the wall. I actually got the idea from a display I saw in the Magnolia home theater section of the Best Buy near me, and I think it looks awesome! I do have the Pioneer speaker bar sitting in my basement, but I doubt I’ll ever hook it up, unless something happens to my Martin Logans.

With the new 1080p sets coming out, some people may be hesitant to get a 720p set like my 5071, but all I can say is that it looks great on the wall and the picture quality is fantastic. Maybe my story will be different if I see a true 1080 picture, but for the meantime, I love my TV.
