If the name ViewSonic isn’t on the tip of your tongue you probably know less about the 50+ other brands promoting LCD products. Don’t know for sure but I seriously doubt most of these unknowns actually manufacture anything themselves. More then likely they are assemblers much like those companies that popped up during the hey day of computers.

At least ViewSonic has a history in the field having been a manufacturer of computer monitors for many years. Since I had a good experience with their monitors I decided to go ahead and purchase their hi def offering. Previous experience gave me the confidence to buy, a $300.00 rebate provided the incentive.

Even so purchasing something this large and expensive on-line caused some concern. Would it arrive in one piece and would it work when I fired it up. I had to believe service would be an issue if I had a failure. Thankfully my fears proved to be unfounded. I wound up paying $1099 for the set delivered to my door. I haven’t seen a better deal anywhere on a 40″ LCD.

Besides the fantastic price, the set comes with all the connections you’ll need including component, composite and HDMI. The 20 watt speaker system is adequate but for the ultimate viewing experience consider adding a 5.1 DVD based surround system. HD brodcasts are in 5.1 audio and isn’t that part of the enjoyment?

Be prepared to not enjoy standard TV, actually you may even prefer your old set for that. For some reason hi def sets make standard TV look awful.

I’ve been disappointed in two things, the color intensity differs in some cases quite noticeably from channel to channel and the audio doesn’t have an automatic leveler. Perhaps other sets suffer from the same problem, since I don’t have another LCD for comparison I can’t say if its doing a worse job then others. Fortunately these problems are minor and the huge saving over most name brands make up for this slight inconvenience.

On the value scale I’d give the set a 10, for performance it rates a solid 7. The picture is outstanding especially for scenes that have been taken outdoors as they look much more natural. I’m happy with my purchase, believe you will be too!
