I recently bought this 37 inch LCD TV at TigerDirect. I got a great price.
It was a refurbished set (I knew that right up front) but from the packaging there is no way you could tell - it looked brand new.
Overall summary - a nice bargain BUT…. beware experienced couch potatoes the bells and whistles are a little clunky.
ViewSonic makes some nice computer monitors, but I think they could have used a focus group to help them test out the TV’s functionality.
I’m not unhappy with my purchase, just a little disappointed.
At the TigerDirect store, it was a toss up between two LCD TVs, the ViewSonic 37inch and a Vizio 42inch.
I had been interested in the Vizio for a couple of months now and it was time to make a decision.
When comparing the TVs, for some reason the staff could not find a remote control for the ViewSonic,
so I bought it based on the in store performance and the specs on the box.
(I wonder if losing the remote was ‘on purpose’?)
If I had been able to test this TV with the remote, I might not have bought it.
The ViewSonic image was a little sharper than the Vizio
(probably because it was a smaller screen). It was also a little cheaper.
The ViewSonic won out since it seemed to have the same features and it was a better fit for my room.
Now - this TV really has a great picture IF you have a good signal/source.
Viewing from DVD, the picture is nice and crisp.
If your signal source is only good - the picture can be pretty poor.
If you’ve already split your cable service 6 different ways inside your home, you may want to get a cable signal amplifier.
I did and now all of my channels look really good.
The TV’s sound - it’s OK. What do you expect from 20-watts total power?
If you want theatre sound, don’t blame the TV - buy a proper amp and speakers.
The TV allows you 9 different aspect ratios (OK, some of them are really the same).
I really liked these options, I hate viewing a 4:3 TV signal on a 16:9 screen - everyone looks fat.
They’ve got a nice ‘wide 3′ aspect that I like, it cuts off a little from the top and bottom and makes the picture wider
- it’s perfect for partial letterbox TV programs (like Law & Order).
The setup menus are easy to operate and simple to use.
The set has it’s own (1) tuner and allows 9 input sources (unless I miscounted).
Included are 3 HDMI ports (none of which I can use right now).
Now… for the stuff I didn’t like.
The set comes with PIP and POP. My girlfriend insisted on this feature, so we can switch back and forth between channels during commercials and not miss a thing.
I know the set only has 1 tuner, so, I figured - no big deal: we connect the VHS recorder to the set and use it’s tuner as the other input for the PIP.
WRONG - The PIP and POP have to come from two separate set of inputs.
If you’re using the Cable (or Antenna or RCA-Video or S-Video) input the other input has to be YPbPr, VGA or HDMI.
Well… the best my VHS has is S-Video, so…. no watching 2 channels at once for me (unless I pay for HD-TV or get a VHS machine with a YPbPr or HDMI output).
So - I think they dropped the ball on that one.
A bigger problem…. changing the channel.
If you are watching one channel and want to key in another channel - as soon as you start keying in the new channel number this large grey bar appears
and covers about 1/8th of the picture for 3 seconds before changing the channel.
After it changes, the bar stays there for another 5 seconds (with the channel information).
Why couldn’t they have just super-imposed the channel information on the screen rather than overlay so much of the picture!!!
If they did ANY user testing, this should have been noticed and changed.
Overall a great deal, but disappointing functionality.
