This TV is for people who want an inexpensive flat panel and don’t mind a few picture flaws. This dark-horse LCD delivers on price (if you are lucky enough to get the promised rebate), but not on picture quality and ease of use.
The first thing you notice is the clunky, ill-conceived remote, which is a common problem across all Syntax Olevia TVs. The picture suffers from poor color decoding, and the monitor is unable to render deep blacks. Also, the picture displays jagged-edge artifacts. The non-removable, on-board speakers are pretty weak, and even distort the sound in some cases. Last, but not least, the shiny Syntax logo is distractingly large and overpowering. Overall, the TV is just OK. Be careful with their rebates. I and three of my friends were declined for dubious reasons.
Bottom Line: A relatively inexpensive choice for people who want a bright picture and aren’t too concerned about performance. The hype about this off-brand TV is just that. The manufacturer has dumped relatively inexpensive units on the US market from Taiwan/Hong Kong. When making a purchase of this magnitude, it seem we must still be willing to pay a premium for quality and go with a brand name such as Sharp, Samsung, Panasonic, or Sony.
