Bought this unit at Buydig.com for $1,400 after Syntax on-line mail-in rebate of $300. Buydig.com had it at my doorsteps in 2 days. Now that’s exceeding customer expectations.
I was in the market for a bedroom TV. I quickly decided a flat panel TV would satisfy our requirements (HDTV, 30-32″, great picture, co-exist with the room). I wanted a great picture, but not at all cost, so Plasma and the ridiculous prices where never a real consideration. So I quickly began my due diligence on LCD flat panel solutions.
I first viewed the Syntax Olevia on the HSN shopping channel and was impressed with specs. All other units I viewed had dark pictures and lost a great deal of picture detail. My research ultimately lead me back to the Syntax Unit, although I was somewhat apprehensive after having read some not so encouraging on-line reviews. This notwithstanding, I threw caution to the wind and purchased the Unit site unseen. We’ve now had the unit for 4 weeks and its quickly become the favorite TV viewing spot in the house. We have it connected to a High Def TW cable box. The HD broadcast in 16:9 is crystal clear. The Unit more than delivers on picture clarity and brightness. However, if you are considering buying this unit, you need to reconcile upfront how much conventional TV will be viewed this unit. During standard TV 4:3 aspect ratio viewing, two vertical light grey bars will appear on each side of the picture. This may be annoying to some. For us, this is an acceptable trade-off given the quality of the 16:9 picture in high def. Also, the unit has a ZOOM mode viewing option which takes the 4:3 broadcast and attempts to fill the screen. The ZOOM mode eliminates most of the vertical grey bars - but not entirely.
The sound quality is excellent for the bedroom. If you plan on using this in a media room, I would hook it up to a proper theater surround system. Yes, the feel on the remote is a bit spongy, but functional. The only out-the- box adjustment I had to make was the color temperature, as the factory settings made the colors to vivid. This was a easy adjustment through the well organized on-screen Menu. Oh yes, the back lit blue Olevia logo when the Unit is off is quite cool. In summary, I think this Unit represents great value for its price range. The more expensive Sharp and Sony Units have nothing over this Unit other than a more expensive price tag. That’s all folks!
