Let me begin by saying I am not a technophile…just a plain old couch potato!
I had been researching 40″ & 42″ LCDs for months, and when I saw the Sony KDL40W3000 marked down to $1399 at Sears “Black Friday” sale, I felt pressured to get it right then and there as the sale price was only valid until noon. I kind of wish I had held out and waited for the new Samsung LNT4071F to go down in price. Here’s why:
The Sony looks great, was easy to set up, has pretty good sound, many great options for adjusting picture. BUT: pixelation around any text is pretty bad. I don’t know how I didn’t notice it on the display model on Black Friday (perhaps because it was 7 a.m. and I didn’t have any coffee yet…). When I went back to Sears, I checked out the 46″ model, and noticed it again. Sears said I would be charged a 15% re-stocking fee if I returned the tv. The farther you are from the screen, the better the image looks, so I pushed my sofa back as far as I could. I’m getting used to the pixelation now, and so far I’m content. I know I got a great deal but part of me wishes I would have held out until the Samsung price went down. The Samsung model listed above has the best vivid HD picture I’ve seen yet. The Sharp Aquos was on my list as well, but the sound didn’t seem as good as the Sony.
