We bought this tv after returning a new 23″ Samsung HD tv that we purchased for $500 at Costco and saw this one with a price drop to $699. We had only wished we could afford one of these so we jumped on it when the priced dropped so much. We had looked and listened to hundreds of HD tvs at Best Buy, Costco, Sears, Target, and Circuit City. And we also read all types of online reviews.

Although I loved the features of the 23″ Samsung, the picture on this 32″ tv kills the smaller set. This is PERFECT tv (a little over the top actually) for the bedroom, and probably for most living rooms. With an 8000:1 contrast ratio, it is way better than the previous Samsung that only weighed in at 3000:1. Beware: there is no industry standard for this ratio, but it is useful in comparing tvs of the same brand. We put this on the stand that came with it. The setup was simple.

Picture

Unbelievable. No really. The smaller Samsung had to be adjusted to view from below or it looked dark (the tv is up on a 4-1/2′ bureau). Not this one. It is also much clearer. I hate football and golf, yet found myself watching these programs because it puts you right on the field. We were watching the Malibu fires on this tv and they were alive. The nuance of the lighting that came from the sun setting over the ocean was WOW! Sorry Malibu. Amazing color, clarity, motion - could not ask for a better picture.

Audio

We were apprehensive about the speakers that you can’t even see (the sound comes out of the bottom of the set). These speakers deliver about the best sound you can get from a tv with factory speakers. And many flat panels tvs have really really lousy sound. Also, the menu gives you presets for Music, Movies, and custom settings by using an equalizer. The sound is great in our small bedroom. Last night we watched Heros on NBC - the sound was fantastic and had an interesting dimension that made the story come alive (and at a low volume level).

Menu

The menu is soooo easy to use. It has the everything from an equalizer, to different settings for the picture, sound, and programming to turn the set on and off - its now our alarm clock! The menu has everything you could possibly want and things you didn’t think you needed. Upon request, this tv will look for available channels, both over the air and from the cable/satellite. You can then delete the ones you’ll never watch and set others for “favorite” status to quickly surf later.

Remote

This remote, unlike those of Sony and others, has way more options. The Sony in this price range for example, doesn’t have the sleep turn off button on the remote, you need to go through a few steps once you pull up their menu. Not the Samsung - its at the bottom left where its easy to find. The volume and channel selectors are extra large and light up once you push the light-up button IF you can find it in the dark (funny not). We are very happy with this attractive, light-weight and fairly compact remote. This remote is NOT as user-friendly as say a TIVO remote, or Logitech 880 that we have, so it only gets a B+ from me.

Rabbit Ears

This tv delivers HD signal to us with a simple hook-up to RCA brand plug in rabbit ears that I bought at Best Buy for $40. You must get HD signal from your satellite of cable provider, which costs extra unless you get a deal. I yanked out my old Directv connection (the non-HD signal delivers a lousy picture) and saved $5 a month. Directv wanted a $99 one-time fee plus $10 per month for HD signal. But since this is only late night/early morning tv watching so we don’t need all those stations. We’ll maybe get that when we upgrade our main tv (its analog) to HD.

Hook-ups

Ok, so since this is for our bedroom, I haven’t explored the zillion plugs in the back or on the side (for easy access). It does have 3 HDMI ports for your high end dvd player, etc. plus every kind of plug you would ever need. It has two cable hookups that you can run in tandem with your “air” signal source. I’m sure this tv would kill in the video game department.

Piano Finish/Light

This clean simple finish classes up any decor. However, it is literally a magnet for dust. I later found that by gently wiping the piano finish on the tv and base with a dryer sheet, the tv stopped attracting dust. The light at the bottom can be programmed to never come on, stay on always, or just when the tv is on. I like the factory setting where it comes on when the tv is on. Because it may take awhile to turn on, you know you’ve turned it on when the light is on. The other Samsung was a wait and see - did I turn it on or what?

We got this at Fry’s Electronics for only $699. Today I found it for $799 minus an online discount of 10% at Circuit City. Its $899 at Best Buy. So shop around and see how spectacular HD can be. When we finally upgrade our main tv, I can see us getting another Samsung.
