I have owned this 46″ 1080p LCD unit for about 3 months now and I absolutely love it. I am so impressed with the quality of this set that I had to write a review opposing the other one for this unit. But, to make it clear, I have not had to deal with Polaroid customer support as I have had a wonderful experience with what I believe to be the best choice on the market. In any case, the vast majority of all consumer-electronics problems are either due to: immediate burn-out (often shipping-related); end-user mishandling/abuse; or improper environment, hookup, or configuration.
The documentation: the “quick-start guide” and “user’s guide” for this device are great and include very easy-to-read instructions: both basic and in-depth to satisfy just about everyone. Plus, the guide is specifically made for this model, not a range of models with a range of features leaving you guessing what your unit does and does not have. The only exception is that the manual (and the remote) suggest that the unit has PIP, which mine does not. (There is a note somewhere confirming that it does not).
FYI
This LCD will give you the best results currently available if you hook it up correctly with equally capable equipment. Be sure that you understand that you will only reach maximum picture and sound quality by pairing-up the right components AND by using the best connection-type available. You will only get high-quality results by using HD-capable components (e.g. HD cable box and service, Blue-Ray OR HD-DVD players, Dolby Digital surround system with digital input) AND high-quality connections. “Up-converting” DVD players will dramatically improve the appearance of most of your DVDs, but nothing like a native 1080p format (e.g. Blue-Ray or HD-DVD). In the case of connections, stick to HDMI if there is an HDMI port on your component units (HDMI transfers both video and audio in the fullest quality). But if you only have DVI, then use an HDMI to DVI cable (this transfers video only, albeit full-quality) in combination with an optical or coax digital audio cable. Always use digital audio (optical is preferred) if you have an separate surround theater system. The built-in speakers are good and do a good job with simulated surround effects, but use a good Dolby Digital or DTS 5.1 system for much better acoustic results.
Full PROs:
1) Price.
2) Beautiful full-HD (1080p) native resolution.
3) Just enough of the best inputs and outputs to satasfy a demanding user: 2-HDMI, Optical & coax digital audio-out, VGA-in up to 1920×1080. For slightly older equipment: 2-Component video inputs. And for old equipment (not adequate for high-quality) a few composite ins and outs, and coaxial cable input. I highly advise that you upgrade as much of your equipment to HDMI/DVI (audio/video sources) and digital audio (audio recievers) as possible in order to take advantage of all that this set can do.
4) Attractive, clean design (set and remote). The screen has a glossy black border around it which can cause annoying glare in certain light conditions, but you should avoid this location for any television based on those same bright-light conditions if at all possible. But, I have mine near a West-facing sliding-glass door and it never really bothers me.
5) Good universal remote.
6) Good documentation with lots of hookup examples.
7) Beautiful color rendering (about the best flesh tone rendering out there) as well as excellent, independent RGB control as well as contrast and warmth presets.
Very good built-in simulated-3D sound and other sound scheme presets. But, I use the optical-out to a Dolby Digital surround system with Sony’s Neo-6 Cinema surround scheme. You can use either or both.
9) Excellent contrast: although it looks bad on paper, this is 1000:1 static contrast NOT dynamic contrast, yielding true blacks that are only surpassed (in my opinion) by Samsung and Sony models that cost much more $. This set can easily compare to other sets with dynamic contrast ratios of 5,000-7,000:1. Also, there is a gamma adjustment which can yield truer blacks for dark environments or a brighter picture in bright environments.
10) Simple, easy to read hookups on the back of the unit and 1 basic (composite) hookup on the side.
11) All HD-Content looks great. Of course, the higher the resolution the better it looks, but my HD cable only goes to 720p and it still looks fabulous. Up-converted DVDs look fantastic, but a PS3 playing Blue-Ray or games is astoundingly clear.
12) This LCD looks great playing fast-motion content (games, sports, action-sequences in movies) unlike some other LCDs that suffer lag and ghosting.
13) Overall great build-quality, everything is sturdy and nothing has gotten marked or worn. Of course, I take good care of my stuff by keeping it clean and making sure that there is plenty of ventilation around the device… common sense. If you do happen to get a set with a bad pixel or pixels, return it!
Note: This happens with LCDs of ANY brand. But, if you are stuck with one, whether it’s a laptop screen or TV, there are “burn-in” DVDs that can sometime revive the pixels. Or, if you want to risk your warranty, you can carefully massage the area of the screen with your finger, covered in an LCD cloth (which you should get to clean the screen anyway… with LCD cleaning spray).
14) This unit really is about the best HDTV I could find on the market, especially when you figure-in the low price… Thank you Polaroid for not disappointing me!
Full “CONs”:
1) The set does not auto-adjust sound. Some cable channels (or just the ads) are ridiculously different volume levels and some TV units will partially normalize the sound levels. But, I am just going to switch to DirecTV where the channels are all broadcast at the same level and there are a whole lot more HDTV channels available (in higher, 1080, resolution). So this is not really much of a Con.
2) As with many HDTV-cable box combinations out there, the “handshake” that occurs when switching to or from HD channels from SD (standard definition) takes too long. This either briefly sends the LCD screen into blue-screen mode with a “no signal” message or you have to turn the cable-box off and on again to reestablish the “handshake”. This is actually more-likely another problem with my cable box, but I thought I would list it here just in case. If you want to learn more about this, research HDCP timeout problems.
3) I really cannot think of a single problem that is a direct issue with this LCD unit! The two issues above are more directly problems with the components plugged into the LCD.
Note: If your setup requires more than two HDMI inputs, you should consider using an external HDMI switching unit, which can often handle 5 HDMI connections. Just plug the output of that unit into one of the HDMI ports on the LCD set.
Good Luck everyone, I hope this has helped.
