I first heard of this TV in Consumer reports, where it scored very well.
I purchased one of these on sale at Target for $799 in January. I was very disappointed with the picture quality from the QAM tuner and the other inputs. I was not expecting good performance on standard definition channels, but even high definitions channels were very pixelated. I already have a Sony HDTV, so a side by side comparison was easy. Even my wife, who claims to be oblivious to the benefits of HDTV, was very critical of the picture.
The best way I can describe it is to say it was similar to watching a streaming video on your PC in full screen mode. The video was blotchy, there was a lot of noise. For bright scenes it was fine, but dark scenes looked very blotchy and pixelated, and action scenes were bad. The TV had a hard time displaying text such as sports tickers. The text seem to shimmer and shift on the screen.
The menu system was ok. The remote was good. Philips made firmware upgrades easy to install and available online. But the picture issues left me with the sense that Philips was dumping the less than stellar LCD panels into the Magnavox brand and selling them at low prices.
After 3 days I returned the television.
