Panasonic TH-50PX600U
The TV will pick up any channel such as 2451, 24-51, 24-5, 245, etc. Some TVs will not do that such as Vizio and Pioneer. This TV works well with terrestrial and cable inputs. It uses a CableCARD rather than a cable tuner box and the integration is great. The TV works fine without the CableCARD but the TV will pick up mostly analogue channels. The cable company may unlock the digital channels that are also availble via antenna. You will need the CableCARD for all digital channels. When tuning, the tuners will pick up all the channels including those accessible via CableCARD but the TV cannot decode and display the picture without the CableCARD installed. The CableCard is usually cheaper than a cable box from most cable companies. The Panasonic logic of operation here is superb.
The TV is very heavy so setting it up takes some muscle.
The picture quality is great. The dark grey levels are good. I believe the LCD TVs may have more potential than Plasma in the future but not until they can match the dark grey and black levels of Plasma.
The SD card functions work ok but I did not see any folder navigation control in watching pictures. It would be best to reduce the size of 5 mb pictures or they will advance very slowly in a slide show. I do not know how Panasonic determines how large the picture will be on screen and sometimes it is smaller than I care for even though the jpg file size is very large.
The dual screen does not work when activating the HDMI input but you can always add the regular video cables to view dual screen and the picture quality is comparable for broadcast TV.
The TV Guide functions on this TV are exceptional when using a cable hookup.
The automated operation of this TV with a compatible Panasonic DVD/VCR player recorder is great.
The TV in conjunction with the TV Guide can control your VCR with the use of the LED cable. This is a clever and useful feature. It works with the VCR portion of my Panasonic DVD/VCR recorder and I believe it works with other VCRs.
If you enable Auto Power On in Setup it will disable the Sleep timer plus other timer functions. The Panasonic control logic is ok but this is a problem area. The auto on and off functions of this TV are very good assuming you leave the Auto Power On turned off.
The 2006 series does not have antireflective screens. Anti glare screens are available in the 2007 models. Also the 2007 models have 1080p whereas the 2006 models only go to 1080i. I do not know of any other additional features on the 2007 models.
The 600 also has a computer VGA connection. All lesser models do not have that connection. The same is true for the 2007 models where only the top model has VGA input.
After many months of evaluations I decided on the Panasonic TH-50PX600U. When watching HD programming you can get very close to this TV before definition is reduced. It has been a very good choice. I would expect the same thing from the 2007 series.
