I’m a complete novice when it comes HDTVs — if you want a more technical review, I recommend looking at erwin1978’s excellent review of this product. Here’s my experience with it, in regards to DVD playback:
Our old 55″ projection TV broke, and we had to buy a new one. Apparantly, the only TVs you can buy nowadays (large-screen ones, at any rate) are HDTV, so we went to Best Buy and perused their offerings. We picked the one that looked like it had the clearest, sharpest HD picture. Big mistake! Tip: if you’re planning on buying an HDTV, write down the model numbers of several that you’re interested in, then go home, and read up on them!
So we get it home, and first discover that many Playstation 2 games don’t work well on it (lag issues; this is common to all HDTVs because of upscaling delay. I’m not even going to try to explain it.) So we might as well use the PS2 as a paper weight from this point forward.
Then we plug in the DVD player. “Oh!”, everyone had told us, “you’ll love watching DVDs on your new HDTV.” Excuse me? Every DVD that we put in looked awful. The colors were horribly run together — erwin1978 in his review likened SD viewing on this LG model to an oil painting; personally, I think it’s more like a watercolor. Regardless, all clarity and sharpness is lost on standard DVDs. I don’t expect my DVDs to suddenly become HD quality now that I have an HDTV, but I don’t expect them to look substantially worse than they did on our old TV!
We bought an upscaling DVD player. It made a very slight difference, but not much. We did lots of fiddling with settings, and cords, and everything we could think of to make our DVDs at least look decent. No luck.
Went back to Best Buy, and said “This looks like crap.” The clerk plugged in a DVD player to the same model, and popped in a couple of DVDs, and said, “Wow, this really is awful.” We popped the same DVDs, using the same player, into a Panasonic model, and a Samsung, and they looked substantially better. Still not as good as they did on our regular TV, but at least decent enough to watch.
I strongly advise against the LG 50PC5D if you have a lot of standard DVDs. If your DVD collection is Blu-ray or HD-DVD, then you’re probably fine.
We’re returning this LG, and buying a Samsung HPT5054 instead.
