2007 editors choices include the larger model as one of the best deals available. For the price this may be right, but the 20″ Vizio compares marginally with more expensive models I have seen. I think the operative term here is “deal”.
For a small flat screen television, however, it performs adequately. It has a fair picture in bright areas, but dark scenes are difficult to distinguish with some irritating shadowing and edgy color transition. The screen offers a wide horizontal viewing angle, but vertical tilt seems to be less forgiving.
In truth, you might not even notice the picture issues if reviews didn’t sensitize you to them. HD transmissions from local broadcasters are still provide better pictures than CRT reception. You probably don’t need Pioneer level reception in your office or kitchen.
VCR reception failed initially, but a reset according to instructions mailed promptly by technical support solved the problem.
The input jacks are a bit inconveniently located - recessed in a niche towards the bottom of the back, which requires tipping the monitor to plug in external components. There is a computer connection, and the monitor can be used as a second screen or used to view the online reruns of network television over the internet, provided you have sufficient bandwidth to run them.
Somewhat tinny audio is what you would expect from a television this size and price. The volume increases distressingly to deafening during commercials - much more noticeably than with other televisions. Unfortunately the volume control is sluggish.
VX20L offers backlight, which some more expensive models do not. Color warmth and intensity are not easy to set up. The remote is somewhat awkward and counter intuitive. Channels cannot be added manually to the remote, but need to be removed from the “do not show” list of channels located by automatic setup. This requires first locating the setup menu by scrolling through a series of oblique icons. (The set up menu is a represented by a rocket ship, for some reason.)
A zoom feature is convenient.
With a built in tuner, the model receives both digital and analogue signals over a simple antenna.
A semi parabolic brushed silver base and a speaker strip pleated in the middle, the Vizio VX20L20 has the feel of annoying sixties hipness, unlike the sleek models by Panasonic and Samsung.
I chose this model for the size and the price. While the Vizio is adequate for a small den, we will not purchase this brand for the main set.
The vx20L is extremely light, so it could be moved from room to room (placed in a guest room, for instance). While I decided to buy locally, I would not hesitate to have this model shipped, while a $250 or higher charge for a 100lb Panasonic would give me pause (not last because sending it back in case of failure would raise the price considerably).
