When we bought this television a year ago it was just introduced. It benefited from the introduction of a new chipset which gave more features at a lower price. This set is available only through Wal-Mart. We have been watching it for a year now and think we understand most of its pluses and minuses.

What We Got

This is a 26” television with an LCD . It is HD with the traditional 16:9 wide screen boasting 1366 x 768 pixels, brightness of 500 cd/m2, and with an average contrast ratio of 600:1. All signals are converted to 720p for display. It has built-in speakers that are not too bad. It comes in black with a fairly narrow footprint base. It is wall mountable, but the hardware is not included. Inputs include a traditional composite video port with S-video jack and audio, two Component (Y,Pb,Pr) Video plus audio inputs, an analog RF input and a digital RF input (only for unscrambled digital video, a card slot is not available) with their associated tuners, and an HDMI plug. If you are coming from a DVI connector, the audio takes up the Video3 port. All inputs are selectable with the very effective IR remote. Outputs include analog audio and optical digital audio. There are buttons on the right side to access power, volume, and channel. As is mostly the case these days, the remote is a necessity to do more than simple channel switching. It works well and is more intuitive than some we have used.

There is an easy to use getting started sheet that gets you hooked up and enjoying quickly. Our first use was with analog cable and the hookup consisted of an RF cable to the analog jack – a snap. Recently we moved to the other coast of America and opted for digital cable with HDTV. The hookup wasn’t much harder, just using a five-wire cable between the two. We also have the analog audio connected to an RF remote headset for listening without interrupting others. Most cables are not included.

But Is It Viewable?

We have been happy with the picture quality and mostly satisfied with the sound quality even when connected just to analog. The usual problems of deciding whether to have black bars at the sides, heads flattened to fill the screen, or parts of the top and bottom cut off are present, of course. The color doesn’t wash out in normal room daylight and reflections are not much of a problem. With its relatively low contrast and brightness (compared to high end systems) it will dull in bright light.

The screen is easy to clean and the set looks nice sitting in our decor. The remote is easy to use. Now, with HD digital available to us, we really enjoy the picture. We have had no problems with the set so can’t comment on the value of the one year limited warranty, Although we have seen better pictures and certainly could have better sound, we are satisfied that we got really good value/price ratio on this TV.
