We wanted a small HDTV for the kitchen in wide screen format and this one seemed perfect. It is slim and lightweight and we liked the color. Set up was easy. We just attached the lead from our over the air antenna and let it scan for available channels. Soon we had almost 30 analog and digital channels to watch. The picture quality on the high definition channels was quite good. We did notice ghosting on some analog channels but this was eliminated by slightly reducing the sharpness setting. The set also allows adjustments for contrast, brightness, etc.

We were impressed by the selection of high quality inputs including HDMI, component and S-video for connecting components like a DVD player. Since this television won’t be used in our entertainment center, most of these inputs won’t be used but it’s nice to have them in case. The television can also be used as a computer monitor.

People new to digital television will be pleased to discover that digital channels carry program guide information which can be displayed by pressing the “guide” button on the remote. This television displays this information much better than other sets we’ve seen.

The sound from the small speakers was only fair. The set does allow the user to adjust sound settings. It also has an output for connecting to an external sound system, but we probably won’t ever take advantage of that in our kitchen location.

A serious shortcoming to this television is the way it scans for available stations. We use an outdoor antenna that rotates to pick up stations in different locations. When we change the direction of the antenna and scan for channels in this different direction, the set loses the channels it previously found. Although you can add back the analog channels that were lost, you can’t do that with the digital channels. If you get your high definition stations from cable or satellite this won’t be an issue. However, if you want to get high definition free over the air, this could be a deal breaker. Believe me, you don’t want to have to do a channel scan each time you change to a channel located in a different direction. Fortunately for us most of the channels we want to watch come from the same direction so this was only a minor problem. If you decide to buy this television, be sure to check that this is not a problem for you. Not all brands act this way so you may find a set that is more suitable for you.

Not all programming is currently broadcast in 16:9 wide screen format. When the broadcast is in the old 4:3 format, the picture has black bars on the sides. The set has optional viewing modes that expand the picture to fill the screen. However, this feature is not available when watching digital channels, which is another negative. As wide screen format broadcasting becomes standard this will be irrelevant.
