I bought this from buy.com for $559 including free shipping. All the reviews said that the tv was great and that the only things that bothered people were the remote and the sound output. My problem was not that the remote looked like it came from a $40 dvd player, but that the channel up and channel down buttons dont work. Also, when I tried to play my xbox in hd, i noticed that the sound did not work at all with the HD channel. I plugged my xbox into my roommates hdtv and it worked fine, so it was definately the tv. I called, emailed, and left messages with Norcent for about a month with no response. Therefore, if you are stupid enough to get the extended warranty, and something goes wrong, you won’t be able to get ahold of them anyways. So I could not fix the sound on the hd or get a new remote even though I only had this tv for a month. I am screwed and am stuck with a crummy “hdtv” which does not have sound on the hd and everytime I want to change the channel, I have to press the numbers in.

I usually recommend LCD TVs (esp. Sharp Aquos) over plasmas, mainly because the LCD screen lasts longer, is brighter, consumes far less electricity, and does not suffer the burn-in problem as plasmas.

After discussing a television upgrade for a month or two, my wife and I finally took the plunge and went shopping for a flatscreen LCD. We set out to go shopping without a real plan. We did a lot of research online and read a lot of reviews, but we didn’t go to the store to buy one specific model. We were going to buy what we felt was a good deal. We went out on Black Friday (day after Thanksgiving) to Circuit City, Best Buy, Sears, and BJ’s. After looking at dozens and dozens of televisions, we finally settled on the Olevia 47″ LCD HDTV. This television was priced in the $1,500 range at Circuit City and several other stores, however, BJ’s had it selling for $1,349.99. On top of that, they were having a “Black Friday Sale,” and we picked up this television for $999.99.

We’d been thinking about an HDTV for a long time. It must have started sometime in 2005 when a friend and I went to a Red Sox game that was shown in HD at a local theater, in lieu of actually being able to secure tickets for Fenway Park. That had been the first time that I’d seen a full baseball game in HD, and from that point on, I was hooked. However, it took over a year until a combination of price drops, Massachusetts’ tax-free weekend and discount coupons combined to create an opportunity to purchase said TV.
